The 1st level of 3 levels required to be completed to become a Company Secretary is known as CS Foundation. The other 2 levels are known as CS Executive & CS Professional.

The CS Foundation Exam comprises of 4 papers of 50 questions each. All questions are multiple choice questions and the student is awarded 2 marks for every right answer. CS Foundation Exam was earlier conducted through OMR Sheets but from June 2016 onwards, CS Foundation Exam would be conducted through Computers (Refer: http://www.icsi.edu/WebModules/Student/introductionofcomputerbased.htm)

To enroll for CS Exams, a student is first required to register with ICSI for CS Foundation. He would be considered as eligible for appearing for CS Foundation exam only after he has studied for the minimum specified period after registering for CS Foundation.

The next CS Foundation Exam is scheduled to be held on 3rd & 4th June 2017. Earlier all 4 papers were conducted on the same day but from June 2014 onwards, exam of first 2 subjects would be conducted on Day 1 and exam of the next 2 subjects would be conducted on Day 2. Students would be required to take a print out of the Admit Card for CS Exams which can be downloaded online.

CS Results are usually announced in the month of August & February for June and December exams respectively. For a candidate to be declared as passed, he would be required to score a minimum of 40% marks in each subject and 50% marks in aggregate. The next level after clearing this level is the CS Executive.

Last date of submission of CS Foundation Exam Form

The last date for submitting the Exam Form for appearing in June 2017 Attempt is 25th March 2017. A Candidate can submit the Exam Form online by logging on the website

The candidate would be required to login to his account through the login option given on the right top.  After logging in, a direct link will appear for exam registration. The Fees payable at the time of submission of the CS Foundation Exam Form is Rs. 1200 (Total) for all the 4 subjects.

In case a student fails to submit the cs foundation exam form before 25th March 2017, he can submit the same before 10th April with a late fees of Rs. 500. However, ICSI has decided to stop the facility of accepting physical exam forms from 1st Oct 2013 and from 1st Oct 2013, only exam forms submitted online would be accepted.

Eligibility for appearing for CS Foundation Exam

For a candidate to be eligible for appearing for this exam, he should have cleared 10+2 Exams. Provisional Registration is also allowed for students who have appeared for their 10+2 Exams and are awaiting their Results.

Moreover, a candidate should also have completed 8 months from the Date of Admission for the CS Course (excluding the month of admission and the month in which the exam is being conducted). Therefore the following are the cut-off dates:-

The Students who have registered before the last date of registration can appear for the respective attempt as mentioned above. The option of coaching completion certificate has been discontinued and no suggested answers would also be provided to the students under this new scheme.

Exemption from appearing for CS Foundation Exams

The following categories of students are exempted from appearing for CS Foundation Exams and can directly appear for CS Executive Exams:-

  1. Students who have cleared CA-CPT or have cleared CMA- Foundation Exams
  2. Students who have a masters degree in any discipline other than Fine Arts.

Other Relevant Points regarding CS Foundation Exam

  1. Provisionally registered students of CS Foundation are required to regularize their admission by submitting the proof of passing 10+2 Exams within 6 months of the date of registration
  2.  There will be 50 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ’s) of 2 marks each in each paper and the candidate shall be given 90 minutes for appearing in both the papers in each day. (45 minutes in case of exemption in 1 of the papers)
  3. The Question Paper will be displayed on the screen in both Hindi as well as English language except for Business Management, Ethics and Communication paper for which questions will be displayed in English language only.
  4.  Candidates are allowed to use their own battery operated noiseless and ordinary cordless calculators with not more than 6 functions, 12 digits and 2 memories. Use of programmable, scientific or printing model of calculator or calculator not confirming to the above specifications is not allowed.
  5. Every candidate is required to appear for all the subjects for which he/she has enrolled. However, in case the candidate has an exemption – he is not required to appear for that specific paper.
  6. Candidates are required to secure a minimum of 40% marks in each paper separately and an overall aggregate of 50% marks for all the papers.
