Common Proficiency Test (CPT) is the entry level course and is same as Entrance Exams of Other Professional Organisations. Students interested in pursuing the Chartered Accountancy Course have to first apply for CPT Registration by purchasing the Brochure available at all the various branches of ICAI.
The CPT Exam is held twice every year in the month of June and December and the next CPT Exam is scheduled to be held on 18th Dec 2016. (Recommended Read: CPT Exam Date Sheet Dec 2016 Exam)

The Following Documents shall be enclosed along with the CPT Registration Form for appearing for Dec 2016 Exams
- Demand Draft for the whole amount drawn in favour of “The Secretary, Institute of Chartered Accountants of India” In case the Student opts for submitting the Registration Form online – he would be required to make the payment via Debit/Credit Card.
- Attested Copy of Class X Pass Certificate
- Attested Copy of Class XII Pass Certificate
The Entrance Level Exam of the CA Curriculum i.e. CPT Consists of 4 Multiple Choice Papers which are divided into 2 Sections of 2 Papers each as shown below
Eligibility for CPT Registration
CPT Exam is held twice a year in the month of June and December and the CPT Results are announced in the following month of the Exam. To be eligible to appear for CPT Exam, a student should have registered 2 months prior to the month in which the Exam is scheduled to be held.
Therefore, to appear for June Exams – a student should have applied for CPT Registration before 1st April and to be eligible to appear for December Exams – a student should have applied for CPT Registration before 1st October. In case 1st April/1st October happens to be a Gazetted holiday/ National Holiday/ Bank Holiday/ Sunday, the next working day would be deemed to be the last date for CPT Registration
To be eligible to appear for CPT Exams, a student should have cleared/appeared for Class XII Exams. In case the Result of Class XII has not been declared at the time of registering for CPT, the students can apply for provisional registration and such students would have to furnish an attested copy of their passing certificate with ICAI on clearing the Class XII Exams.
There is no condition regarding the minimum marks that should be scored in Class XII Exams and everyone who has cleared the same is eligible to apply for CPT Exams.
After clearing the CPT Exam, a candidate is required to clear the IPCC Exam, complete 3 years of Articleship Training and clear CA Final Exams to become a Chartered Accountant.

CPT Exemption for Graduates
Students who have completed their graduation or are in the last year of Graduation are exempted from appearing for CPT. They can directly enroll into IPCC without appearing for CPT. This new scheme of CPT Exemption is popularly referred to as Direct Entry Route.
However, students enrolling for the CA Course through the Direct Entry route have to first complete 9 months of articleship training before being eligible to appear for IPCC Exams which is not the case for students enrolling for the CA Course through CPT Registration.
