ICAI has announced that the CPT Exemption for Graduates has been approved by the Govt. and this Scheme would be known as the Direct Entry Scheme. This has come in effect from 1st August 2012. Moreover, ICAI has also announced changes in CPT Passing Marks. All details regarding these changes are mentioned below.
A candidate shall ordinarily be declared to have passed the CPT Exam if he obtains at one sitting a minimum of 30% marks in each section and a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate of all the sections, subject to the principle of negative marking, in such manner as may be determined by the Council, from time to time. The CPT Results are normally announced in the next month of conducting the Exam.
The Direct Entry Scheme has been introduced under which Common Proficiency Test (CPT) shall be exempted for the following candidates
(I) Any Commerce Graduates/Post-Graduates who has studied any 3 full papers of 100 marks each out of
and passed the Graduate/Post-Graduate Examination by securing an aggregate of minimum of 55% of the total marks or its equivalent grade from any recognized Universities including Open Universities is exempted from appearing for CPT and can directly appear for the next level i.e. CA Intermediate through the Direct Entry Route.
(II) Any other Graduate/Post-Graduate not falling in the above category (i.e. Non-Commerce Graduates) who has passed the Graduation/Post-Graduation examination by securing an aggregate of minimum of 60% of the total marks in the examination or its equivalent grade from any recognized Universities including Open Universities can also avail of the CPT Exemption
(III) Any Candidate who has passed the Intermediate level examination conducted by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI) or by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) is also exempted from appearing for CPT in the Direct Entry Scheme.
Please Note: ICAI has clarified that for the purpose of calculating percenrtage of marks, any fraction of half or more shall be rounded off to the next whole number
The students pursuing final year of graduation are also allowed to provisionally register for CA Inter but are allowed to appear for CA Inter Exams only after appearing in the final year examination of Graduation Course. Their provisional registration to the CA Course would be confirmed only after submission of satisfactory proof of their having passed the graduation course with the prescribed percentage of marks.
Such Class of Students are allowed to start their articleship only on completion of Graduation and are only allowed to complete the Orientation Course & Information Technology Training (ITT) during the period of Provisional Registration.

ICAI has also announced that Students who are already enrolled with ICAI for CPT / Inter and wish to avail CPT Exemption or start their articleship without the prerequisite of clearing Group I of CA Inter are requested to follow these guidelines -
